Nutritional Yeast Brands Contain Detectable Lead Levels
Dr. Michael Greger from Nutrition Facts conducted research into lead levels found in nutritional yeast a couple of years ago. You can read the full results in, Three Brands of Nutritional Yeast Contain Detectable Lead Levels But the Risk is Minimal.
Heres the summary: they tested 8 different brands of nutritional yeast, and 3 of the brands had detectable levels of lead.
The three brands found to have detectable lead levels were Frontier, KAL, and Whole Foods. The brands with no detectable lead were Bobs Red Mill, Bragg, Red Star, Dr. Fuhrman, or NOW Foods.
However, normal serving sizes of all of these brands still keep you well within the safety limits. You would have to be eating a ton of nutritional yeast before this could become even a possible issue.
Still, Dr. Greger recommends that pregnant women eating more than 1/3 of a cup of nutritional yeast per day choose the brands shown to contain no detectable lead. Otherwise, dont worry about it. Again, heres the full article.
If you specifically want to buy these brands with no detectable lead, here are Amazon links for a few of them:

Supports Our Bodys Normal Functioning
B vitamins are required for our overall health. They help give our cells energy, support healthy digestion, help breakdown fats, help us make proteins, and behave as coenzymes that help initiate essential bodily/cellular functioning. Many people are deficient in these B vitamins, especially vegans and vegetarians. Thus getting supplemental sources of Vitamin B-rich foods like nutritional yeast is essential.
The Best Overall Nutritional Yeast

Each one tablespoon serving of Bragg Nutritional Yeast Seasoning contains 5 grams of protein and three grams of carbs. It is an excellent source of Vitamins B1, B2, B3, and B6. As a low sodium, gluten and sugar-free flakes option fortified with folate and Vitamin B12, it is an excellent choice for people who follow a vegan diet.
Perhaps among the more well-known brands in the health food market, Bragg offers a very straightforward nutritional yeast seasoning at a competitive price. Devoid of artificial colors or preservatives, this nutritional yeast seasoning has a slightly nutty, but appetizing taste.
With a slightly nutty, savory taste, Braggs makes a lovely addition to plain popcorn, though we did add a bit of olive oil to help the flakes stick. It is packaged with a classic-looking bottle that offers both a wide mouth and a narrow opening to make measuring out large amounts or sprinkling flakes on top of prepared food a simple endeavor.

Where Can I Buy It
You can typically find nutritional yeast in the natural food section. If your store carries Bobs Red Mills or Bragg products, chances are, you might find it. Additionally, big-box stores like Target, Walmart, Publix, Winn-Dixie, and Safeway might have it just ask.
Furthermore, if your market has a bulk food area search for it there. A bulk food area or aisle is a place where you can find a variety of foods in large containers.
Examples of the types of foods youll find there include rice, lentils, trail mixes, cereals, beans, nuts, seeds, and flours.
You can call most grocery stores and ask what they currently have in stock. If all else fails, you can find it .
Nutritional yeast is an acquired taste, so with this in mind, I suggest buying a smaller size to see if you like it first.

Nutritional Yeast: The Antiviral Antibacterial Immune
Nutritional yeast, also known as savory yeast or nooch, is an inactive type of yeast made from sugarcane and beet molasses. In the scientific form Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or sugar-eating fungus, yeast cells use the sugar for energy.
Yellow in color, nutritional yeast comes in flakes, granules or a powder-like form and is often used as a condiment due to its savory taste and health benefits. It has a nutty, cheesy flavor and is often used to emulate cheese in vegan dishes, thicken sauces and dressings, and act as an additional boost in nutrients because its filled with an array of B vitamins.
So is nutritional yeast good for you? How does it differ from regular yeast? And why should you consider adding this pantry staple to your next shopping list? Heres what you need to know.
How Long Does Nutritional Yeast Last For
Nutritional yeast has a great shelf life. Since the yeast is fully deactivated, dried, and dehydrated, you dont have to worry about bacteria that much. Plus, most containers of nooch come with a light preservative which provides added protection.
I recommend storing nutritional yeast in a cool, dark place like your kitchen cabinet. You can also store it in the refrigerator .
As long as its stored correctly, it can easily last up to a year or more!

Im asked all the time What is nutritional yeast?. Ill admit that I had no idea what it was until I started eating a vegetarian diet. Now its one of my favorite ingredients and I cook with it almost every day!
So lets talk about nooch and its uses from this dietitians perspective. In this guide, well talk about what it is, if its healthy, and how to use it.
Nutritional yeast is a savory, nutty all-purpose seasoning. It is most commonly used to add a cheesy flavor to vegan and dairy-free recipes, but it can do so much more than just stand-in for cheese!
Not only is it a flavorful ingredient, but its also brimming with important B vitamins like Vitamin B12. Nutritional yeast is also low in sodium, making it a great option for those looking to reduce salt intake without sacrificing flavor.

How To Add Nutritional Yeast In Your Dishes
Since were on the topic of how I like to add nutritional yeast, there are plenty of other ways to include nutritional yeast in your diet. You can top nutritional yeast to foods including stews, soups, salads, pasta dishes, and popcorn.
Because it takes up more of a savory taste, Id use nutritional yeast on savory dishes. Think of it as a topping similar to how folks use Parmesan cheese. Additionally, it can be used as the main star, like cheesy vegan sauces.
Recipes With Nutritional Yeast:
Potential Health Benefits Of Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional yeast is a great source of vitamins and minerals. It also contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein like those found in animal products.
Complete proteins are important nutrients that assist functions like tissue repair and nutrient absorption. They may also prevent muscle loss.
Other potential health benefits of nutritional yeast include:
Heart Health
The fiber in nutritional yeast, beta-glucan, may reduce cholesterol levels. Nutritional yeast is also a low-glycemic food that contains chromium, a mineral that may help regulate your blood sugar. Maintaining good blood sugar and cholesterol levels lowers your risk for diabetes and heart disease.
Immune System Support
Beta-glucan is also believed to strengthen your immune system. One study found that people who consumed nutritional yeast were 25% less likely to catch a cold than those who didnât. Those who did get sick experienced less severe symptoms and sleeping problems.
Nutritional yeast also contains high amounts of antioxidants, which may have anticancer properties and improve certain immune responses.
Physical Recovery
Nutritional yeast may improve your physical recovery after exercising. Studies have found that athletes who consumed yeast products with beta-glucan experienced less post-workout fatigue and better moods than those who didnât.

Is Nutritional Yeast Expensive
Although it sounds fancy, nutritional yeast is very affordable! You can get a small shaker for as little as $4 or $5. If you plan on using a lot of nooch, you can get a larger container for around $15 to $20.
The price typically varies depending on the brand youre looking at, how much youre buying, and whether or not the nutritional yeast is organic.
Nutritional Yeast In Grocery Stores: Top 5 Options In 2023
Nutritional yeast is one of my favorite vegan seasonings. Its a simple way to give any dish a cheesy, savory flavor that many compare to parmesan cheese.
Its also pretty affordable too, so theres no good reason not to try it! The only question is, Where can you find and buy nutritional yeast?
Thanks to the vegan diets growing popularity, nutritional yeast is available in most large grocery stores and online grocery stores.
It can typically be found on the seasonings aisle or baking aisle, depending on how your particular grocery store is laid out.
You may have some difficulty finding nutritional yeast at smaller grocery stores or grocery stores located in more rural areas. However, its widely available at most major grocers, so finding some high-quality nooch shouldnt be too much of a challenge.
Todays post is all about nutritional yeast: where to find and buy it. Below, Ill show you some of my favorite grocery stores to buy nutritional yeast from, explain where to find it in-store, and go over alternative options like buying it online or getting it delivered to your home.
Isnt it time you added a bit more flavor to your vegan cooking?

How To Use It As A Seasoning
While nutritional yeast is most popularly known as an ingredient in dairy-free cheese recipes, there are so many ways to use it in everyday cooking.
Here are a few of my favorite places to sprinkle nutritional yeast flakes:
- Popcorn: Use as a seasoning on homemade popcorn.
- Kale chips: Add a sprinkle of nutritional yeast flakes before or after baking kale chips.
- Pasta: Add nooch to tomato-based pasta sauce for a cheesy twist.
- Vegetables: Sprinkle on top of roasted vegetables or steamed vegetables as an all-purpose seasoning.
- Toast: Sprinkle on top of hummus toast or avocado toast for extra flavor.
Where To Find Prepackaged Nutritional Yeast In The Store
If you dont feel like messing with the bulk bins, you can also often find nutritional yeast in a shaker, big tin, or bag, too. For this, youll just have to look through the natural foods section of the store.
Here is the aisle I found in Wegmans with the prepackaged nutritional yeast:
This was just in a random aisle in the natural foods section, kind of near the gluten-free foods. Youll see there are other health-food products here, such as dressings, toppings, taco filling mix, and vegan mac and cheese.
Nutritional yeast is most commonly used as a toppingso it may be near the other healthy toppings. But since its most well-known among health food fanatics and vegans, I would look in the health/natural food section before looking by normal toppings.
Heres the shaker of nutritional yeast that is most common in most U.S. stores, in my experience. Ive found this same Bragg shaker at a bunch of different stores over the years:
Braggs Nutritional Yeast Seasoning shaker
If you look closely, youll see that the per pound price is actually a lot worse for this shaker compared to the bulk bin. Its $21.30/lb for the shaker, while it was $12.99/lb from the bulk bin.
Actually, since I recognized the Bragg shaker right away, I didnt even realize there were more nutritional yeast options to the left!
There was a prepackaged bag of nutritional yeast from Bobs Red Mill. And there was also an empty spot where it looks like Red Star nutritional yeast is usually stocked.

Can You Use Normal Yeast Instead Of Nutritional Yeast
What most people consider normal yeast, which is active yeast, and it cannot be used in place of nutritional yeast. The two are very different and used for very different purposes.
Active yeast is used as a leavening agent, and its main purpose is to make pastry dough rise, while nutritional yeast is used more as a flavoring agent to add a cheesy, nutty flavor to food.
Using normal yeast will not give you the same taste or result as nutritional yeast.

Nutritional Yeast Nutrition Notes
Naturally rich in protein and fiber, nutritional yeast is regarded as one of the tastiest supplements you can add to a vegan diet. ¼ cup has 8 grams of protein. Its also a good source of thiamine, riboflavin, potassium, calcium, and iron.
Many brands go further to add B-12 to the finished product, boosting its nutritional value substantially . B-12 is especially rare in plant-based foods, vegans can benefit from adding nutritional yeast to their arsenal of pantry staples. Heres a complete nutritional profile of nutritional yeast.

Risks And Side Effects
What are the side effects of nutritional yeast? For most people, the potential nutritional yeast dangers are minimal, and it can be safely enjoyed as part of a healthy, well-rounded diet. Not only is nutritional yeast gluten-free and vegan-friendly, but its also free of lactose, sugar, additives and preservatives.
If you have an allergy to yeast, its best to avoid this ingredient altogether to prevent food allergy symptoms, such as hives, itching, swelling and stomach pain. On the other hand, if you have a sensitivity to the active yeast found in bread, nutritional yeast is likely safe as it is pasteurized and deactivated during processing.
However, with all new foods, its always best to consume a small amount first and slowly work your way up to assess your tolerance and prevent adverse side effects. If you have any issues metabolizing folic acid, you may also want to moderate nutritional yeast intake and select unfortified varieties whenever possible.
Another common question is: Do you put nutritional yeast in the fridge? It does not need to be refrigerated, but it should be stored in a dark, cool and dry area to maximize its shelf life. Although it can usually last around a year or two with proper storage, its important to monitor any changes in color, taste and smell to make sure its still good prior to consumption.
