An Apple Cider Vinegar Sitz Bath To Relieve Yeast Infection Symptoms
ByJohn Cielo | Submitted On August 12, 2009
But who has a sitz bath today? Very few of us. But here’s the good news if you’re trying to get rid of your yeast infection you don’t need a sitz bath, use your ordinary bath. But first, let’s look at why apple cider vinegar is so popular as a home remedy for yeast infection.
Apple cider vinegar has been used as a home remedy for many ailments and conditions for thousands of years. It is mentioned as such in ancient Greek manuscripts, by no less a person than Hippocrates himself.
But back then the apple cider vinegar was raw with no preservatives. And so today, as a remedy for yeast infection, it has to be raw, un-distilled, unpasteurized and unfiltered with no preservatives or additives. Get it from health food stores or some grocery stores. Ask the assistant for help.
Now this is how to use apple cider vinegar as a ‘sitz’ bath: Fill your normal bath with sufficient warm water to just cover your hips and buttocks in a sitting position. Add 2 full cups of vinegar and mix thoroughly. Do not add anything else like bubble bath etc.! Sit upright in your ‘sitz’ bath for a minimum of 20 minutes, holding your lips open as long as you can to ensure the full benefit. A man needs to pull the foreskin back. Do this twice a day until your yeast infection symptoms disappear.
Replenish Your Good Bacteria
Antibiotics attack good bacteria all over your body. You may be able to undo some of this damage by increasing the number of good bacteria in your body.
Consider taking a probiotic supplement containing Lactobacillus, like this one. You can also try adding some yogurt containing live active cultures to your diet. Heres a guide to brands containing Lactobacillus acidophilus.
Allergies Or Other Skin Conditions
Cleaning products can trigger symptoms if youâre allergic to one or more of their ingredients. Soaps and feminine hygiene products can sometimes do this, as can laundry detergents.
Certain skin conditions can also cause itching and other symptoms. They sometimes require treatment with steroid ointments like hydrocortisone.
Small cuts can even feel itchy and irritated while theyâre healing.

Male Thrush Or Yeast Infection Symptoms
Both men and women typically have a healthy level of Candida yeast in their body. However, when the yeast builds up, it can cause a variety of symptoms.
While many men dont experience severe or noticeable symptoms of a yeast infection of their genitalia, some might experience symptoms such as:
- disagreeable smell
When Not To Use It

Dont do a sitz bath with an active genital herpes outbreak. The softening of skin around active lesions may make that skin more vulnerable and worsen the lesions!
As always, ask your doctor if this is right for you! I in no way mean to suggest this fixes all vulvar and vaginal irritation and inflammation but it can be a temporizing treatment to decrease symptoms while youre waiting for that gyno appointment.

How To Do It:
Fill a simple bath with a few inches of water
If youre a bath hater and needs some alternatives, try:
- Basin or a plastic sitz bath (available as pharmacies, medical supply stores, or the internet. Look for something like the picture. Fill with water, place it under the toilet seat if appropriate, then sit to soak the area.
- A detachable shower head in shower will work to apply a steady stream of water.
- If all else fails, apply a wet washcloth to the area.
Most people notice a difference after 3- 5 days. I tend to recommend 7 days in a row for best effect and then as needed after that.
Why Is My Yeast Infection Worse At Night
Vulvar itching affects the outer female genitals, and it can be irritating and annoying, especially at night. While this symptom can happen at any time of day, it might seem more pronounced at night because there are fewer distractions. This makes you hyperaware of the itching.

Can You Get It From Kissing
You can transmit Candida fungus to a partner through kissing. But that doesnt mean that theyll develop thrush as a result.
Thrush happens when risk factors, like taking antibiotics or having a suppressed immune system, throw off your bodys natural balance of Candida albicans flora. So while kissing a person with thrush might contribute to having more Candida to deal with, it wont necessarily infect you. Remember that our bodies naturally have Candida.
What Is A Yeast Infection
Vaginal yeast infections are painful, itchy, uncomfortable infections caused by an overgrowth of a fungus, most often candida albicans.
Sometimes though, when a woman goes through a significant hormonal change or has a weakened immune system, her vaginal environment becomes less acidic and the fungi proliferate into a yeast infection. Women are more prone to developing yeast infection when they are:
- Living with HIV or other medical conditions that suppress the immune system

When To See A Doctor
Yeast infections are not the only ailment that can affect your vaginal health. If youve never experienced a yeast infection before, are pregnant, or your symptoms are severe or prolonged, make an appointment with a gynecologist for medical advice and a proper diagnosis. Its important to rule out other bacterial or sexually transmitted infections that may be causing your symptoms.
Figure Out If It’s Really A Yeast Infection
As Dr. Brandye pointed out, there are many things that you might confuse for a yeast infection, like BV, a UTI, or STIs like herpes. Here are some telltale signs to help you differentiate, especially if you’re not sure if you should pick up some Monistat, drink cranberry juice, or call your doc.
Yeast infections vs. Bacterial Vaginosis
Yeast infections have lots of itching and irritation and don’t usually have a lot of discharge, but if there is, it’s white and looks like cottage cheese, explains Dr. Brandye. A more severe yeast infection might cause you discharge with a greenish tint to it. On the other hand, bacterial vaginosis will usually have discharge with a fishy odor.
Yeast infections vs UTIs
Dr. Brandye also adds that sometimes urine coming into contact with the vulva may cause burning, which makes women think they’re experiencing a UTI and not a yeast infection, but UTIs have different symptoms, such as pelvic pain, pain when you urinate, and super frequent urination with with only a small amount of pee coming out.
Yeast infections vs STIs
If you notice any new bumps or lesions, it might not be a yeast infection and could be an STI. These bumps might not always be painful, but things like herpes can cause pain and irritation that may mimic a yeast infection, Dr. Brandye says. However, the pain from these lesions would be more localized to where the lesions are.

How Can I Prevent Future Yeast Infections
The best way to reduce your risk of getting a yeast infection is to avoid things that promote the growth of yeast. Heres how:
- Keep the vaginal area clean and dry. After showering, dry the area thoroughly. Always remove wet swimsuits and exercise clothes right away and change into cotton pants without underwear. Limit the amount of time you spend in hot tubs or very hot baths.
- Let the area breathe. Wear cotton, not nylon, underwear and avoid tights and pantyhose without a cotton lining, as well as tight pants. Consider not wearing underwear during sleep to allow some airflow.
- Watch your sugar intake, including alcohol! Sugar is the main food source for yeast.
- Take probiotics, especially if you are taking antibiotics. Probiotics, found in cultured foods like yogurt and especially in Activia, help restore your normal vaginal bacteria.
- Finally, always avoid douches, feminine sprays, deodorant tampons, and even bubble baths, which may contain chemicals that can be irritating.
Can You Get It From Bath Water

Its unlikely that a yeast infection can be transmitted directly through bath water, but there are some caveats that you should keep in mind.
As a rule, showers are better than baths when youre in the process of treating a yeast infection. If you do take a sitz bath with Epsom salt, apple cider vinegar, boric acid, or any other home remedy while youre treating your yeast infection, dont soak for more than 10 minutes at a time. Also make sure to pat the area of the infection completely dry once youre out of the water.
Avoid sexual intimacy in a bath or hot tub when either partner has a yeast infection. The conditions of sex in a water environment might make it easier for a yeast infection to spread through sex.
If two young children are bathing together and one has a yeast infection, be careful not to use the same cloth or sponge to wash them both. If possible, avoid bathing your child at all when they have a yeast infection, opting for quick showers and sponge baths instead.
Keep in mind that scented soaps or bubble bath may irritate or prolong yeast infections.

You May Want To Wait To Have Sex Until Your Symptoms Clear
You’re probably wondering how long to wait for sex after a yeast infection treatment. But honestly, if you actually have one, you may not want to do anything because of the dry, irritating feeling. “You can also spread yeast between partners, as it typically grows on moist surfaces,” says Dr. Shirazian. Once you feel the treatment start to kick in, that should be your green light for any kind of sexual activity. “You can be active when you no longer feel irritated and youre not noticing the thick signature discharge,” Dr. Shirazian adds.
Boost Your Immune System With A Nutrient
A diet that boosts your immune system can help your body stay in tip-top shape, greatly reducing the risk of an infection since an increase in protective white blood cells is able to target the problem before it worsens.
This is the reason why a weakened immune system is one of the significant risk factors for recurring yeast infections. People with viruses like HIV, or autoimmune disorders, diabetes or cancer are all prone to developing infections more often.

Whatever You Do Don’tget Any Vaginal Itch Cream Without Also Getting An Otc Treatment
Using an anti-itch cream is fine, if you also use an OTC treatment. Dr. Brandye notes that she’s seen women use only the anti-itch treatment thinking that it’ll treat whatever is causing the itching, which can delay someone getting treatment for the underlying infection. Anti-itch creams may soothe your symptoms, but you’re going to be using that tube of cream forever and a half if you think it’ll do anything to treat your infection.
Is There Medical Data To Support Sitz Baths
Yes and no. Sitz baths are one of those old European traditions that over time turned into common medical advice even though the data is mixed, and studies are limited. Theres not enough data to support a specific regimen. My recommendations for patients are based on the limited study data there is, expert opinion in the literature, and individualized care based on my patients concerns.
Why arent there more studies? When simple treatments are anecdotally used and helpful, there is no money to be made, and little to no risk involved, its difficult to get a researcher to do an investigative study to see if it works!
