Yeast Infection Medication Tips
People should be aware of the following advice when taking medication for yeast infections:
- It is important to take the entire dosage of medication. For example, if a person is using a 7-day suppository to clear an infection, they should insert the suppository daily, even if their symptoms begin to clear before the 7-day period ends.
- The oils in certain suppositories and creams can interfere with barrier birth control methods such as condoms. The oils can weaken the materials in condoms, making them less effective. When using these yeast infection treatments, a person should use a different form of birth control or abstain from sex during the duration of the treatment if they would typically use a condom.
- People who are pregnant will need to consult a doctor. Pregnant people should always consult a doctor before using any prescription or nonprescription medication to treat an infection.

I took Monistat 1 day on Sunday night and it is Tuesday night and the itching has some what went away but the pain when I urinate is still there and I do feel pain when I put on the cream that came with it. Should I be worried? And when should this all stop?
Carolyn1812
My doctor said that taking monistat 1 is only more expensive but works the same as Monistat 3. It usually takes 3-7 days for it to clear up unfortunately. Those itch creams never help me.

How Do I Treat Recurring Yeast Infections
You should talk to your doctor if you get four or more yeast infections per year because you may need to take prescription antifungal medicine for a few weeks or longer. This occurs in less than 5% of women. However, being immunocompromised increases the risk of recurrent yeast infections. You should also see your doctor if you do not have improvement within three days or if you have symptoms for more than seven days after starting a treatment. If you experience serious side effects, such as developing a rash, hives, abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea vomiting, foul smelling vaginal discharge, or severe vaginal burning, stop the treatment and seek medical help.

If youre suffering from a vaginal yeast infection, youre not alone about 75% of women will experience a yeast infection at least once. Yeast infections are most commonly caused by a fungus called Candida albicans and cause pesky symptoms such as itching, burning, and discharge. Vagisil and Monistat are two popular over-the-counter medications commonly chosen by women for yeast infection treatment.
Vagisil contains benzocaine and resorcinol, which work as external analgesics, relieving symptoms of burning and itching. Monistat contains miconazole, which is an antifungal that stops the growth of the fungus that is causing yeast infection. While both medications are used for vaginal symptoms, such as itching and discomfort, they are very different medications in terms of ingredients and how they work.

Because Vagisil and Monistat are available OTC, they are typically not covered by insurance. Occasionally, an insurance plan may cover the generic form of Monistat. Even though the drugs are both OTC, the SingleCare card will only work with a prescription.

Is Vagisil Or Monistat More Effective

It is difficult to compare the two drugs because they work differently. Vagisil can help with external itching, but will not cure a yeast infection. Therefore, if the itching is due to a yeast infection, Vagisil may help relieve symptoms temporarily, but will not cure the yeast infection that is causing the symptoms. If you are experiencing itching due to local irritation not associated with a yeast infection, Vagisil may be helpful, while Monistat would not be an effective treatment.
Monistat has been shown to be effective as an antifungal and will help cure a yeast infection. Using the external cream in the combination pack can help relieve symptoms while you wait for the infection to be cured.
You can always check with your doctor to see if Vagisil or Monistat is an appropriate choice for you because he or she should be familiar with your medical condition and history.

Three out of four people with vaginas will experience yeast infections at some point in their lifetime. People become symptomatic when an overgrowth of the organism, typically Candida, penetrates the superficial layers of the skin,” says Barbara Frank, MD, an OB-GYN in Brookline, Massachusetts, and medical adviser to Attn: Grace. Because yeast infections can cause itching burning, and redness, it’s important to have over-the-counter yeast infection medicines on hand.
What Is Monistat 3
If you think you should use a less concentrated treatment, choose Monistat 3. With 200mg per dose and a three-day treatment, theres a much lower risk of developing side effects such as vaginal burning.
However, although its less concentrated, Monistat 3 has 33% of 1-star , which means that it may still be too strong for many women and cause unpleasant side effects.
If you dont experience any improvement in your symptoms within 7 days from starting your treatment, seek advice from your healthcare professional.
