Can Yeast Infections Cause Infertility

Yeast Infections 101

By themselves, yeast infections do not directly cause infertility, but that may not be the whole story. When the balance of vaginal flora is off, a womans body reacts differently to sperm through a number of physical changes. For instance, a yeast infection can cause changes in your cervical mucus, making it harder for the sperm to enter the uterus.

The imbalance in pH levels can make the environment more hostile to sperm and they simply cant survive. If the sperm cant reach an egg to fertilize, either because of changes to the cervix or inhospitable conditions along the way, your chances of getting pregnant will naturally decrease.

Most yeast infections clear up within a few days or weeks with the right course of treatment. If your symptoms dont improve within a few days, or you suffer from chronic infections, you may not be dealing with something else entirely.

Conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, vulvitis, and some STIs may all be responsible for your symptoms. Even hemorrhoids can mimic symptoms, leading you to suspect a yeast infection rather than the true culprit. Overlapping symptoms may lead to a misdiagnosis, but if your symptoms dont go away, even after treatment, follow up with your healthcare provider to get to the bottom of whats really going on.

Yeast infections may not cause infertility, but paying attention to your vaginal health is never a bad thing, especially when it comes to fertility.

How To Stop Men From Giving You A Yeast Infection

Men can suffer from Candida over growth just as easily as women. The majority of Candida in the body resides in the intestinal tract and the colon. The vaginal area and urinary tract are minor sites of colonization. This is true of men and women alike. The average, healthy male and female have the same amounts of normal Candida growth in their respective bodies.

Men are equally susceptible to Candida overgrowth from antibiotics, stress, steroids, poor diet, drugs, alcohol, genetic predispositions, hydrochloric acid deficiency, and metal toxicity from mercury, copper, iron, etc., just like women. The difference is that men cannot get those annoying vaginal yeast infections that are the red flag and hallmark of yeast overgrowth in women. However, they can get penile yeast infections or experience many other symptoms that may never be associated with their Candida overgrowth!

It is very important to understand that men can have yeast overgrowth in their urinary systems and can implant yeast into a womans vaginal area during intercourse or into the mouth during oral sex. However, these same men may not be aware that anything else is wrong with them. It is possible for men to be carriers of yeast and not be aware of it. If a man is suspected of being a yeast carrier and he studies this article fully, he may recognize other symptoms of yeast overgrowth in his body and then make the yeast connection.

What Should I Do If I Think I Have A Yeast Infection During Pregnancy

If you think you have a yeast infection, see your healthcare provider. She’ll take a sample of your vaginal discharge to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other things that may be causing your symptoms.

If you do have a yeast infection, your provider will give you a topical prescription or recommend a specific over-the-counter antifungal vaginal cream or suppository that’s safe to use during pregnancy.

Note: Do not take an oral over-the-counter medication to treat a yeast infection during pregnancy. The drug is unsafe for your baby.

It may take a few days of treatment before you begin to feel some relief. In the meantime, you can soothe the itching with an ice pack or by soaking for 10 minutes in a cool bath.

Let your provider know if the medication causes irritation or doesn’t seem to be working. You may have to switch to another medication. Be sure to complete the full course of treatment to make sure the infection is gone.

How Is Sperm Allergy Different From Yeast Infections

The symptoms of yeast infections are typically localized in the vaginal area, or in the mouth if its a case of oral thrush. On the one hand, the symptoms of sperm allergy may either be localized, or it may affect the entire body if its a systemic allergic reaction.

Other symptoms of anaphylaxis include shortness of breath or wheezing, dizziness, nausea, and low blood pressure. An epinephrine auto-injector can help reduce these symptoms so that theyre no longer life-threatening.

In contrast, yeast infections are seldom life-threatening. Other symptoms of yeast infections that are different from that of sperm allergy include pain during sex, a burning sensation when urinating, and vaginal discharge. The vaginal discharge is usually white, thick, and clumpy.

Yeast infections may be treated using oral medications, creams, and suppositories. Oral medication for yeast infections can easily cure the infection with just one pill. However, it requires a prescription. On the other hand, many anti-fungal creams and suppositories for the treatment of yeast infections are available over the counter.

Its best not to engage in either vaginal or oral sex until after the infection has been completely treated. Friction during sex can actually worsen the irritation, and sores or fissures may form in the vulva or the vaginal area if the infection becomes severe.

What Are The Symptoms Of Bacteria

When a bacterial infection is the cause of vaginitis, the diagnosis is termed âbacterial vaginosisâ . No one knows exactly why some women are more susceptible than others to the bacterial imbalance that leads to BV, but it is extremely commonâin fact, BV is the single most common type of vaginitis.

BV triggers include douching and vaginal sprays, washing with harsh soap, and having sex without a condom, particularly with a new partner.

Symptoms are typically a fishy odor, thin discharge, and itching/irritation.

Youre Not Taking Probiotics

When antibiotics take away your bodys good bacteria, probiotics will place them back where they belong. The good bacteria provided by probiotics help minimize the growth of candida and the development of yeast in the reproductive system.

According to OB-GYN Alyssa Dweck, To restore and maintain an optimal vaginal pH balance, consider a daily vaginal health probiotic. For the perfect fit, look for brands that are packed with Intelliflora. Theyre the only probiotic blend with four unique strains of the most dominant lactobacilli found in healthy vaginal microflora.

If youre looking for a more natural way to ingest probiotics, try consuming fermented foods. These include kombucha, sauerkraut, and kimchi.

When To See A Doctor

Men who have never had a yeast infection or who have severe symptoms should see a doctor.

It is also important to see a doctor when an infection does not clear on its own. Symptoms could be signs of diabetes or conditions that weaken the immune system.

Diagnosis and treatment are important, as untreated yeast infections could cause chronic prostatitisan inflammation of the prostate gland.

They can also lead to:

  • Phimosis or tightening of the foreskin
  • Narrowing of the opening of the urethra
  • Balanitis xerotica obliterans, which causes white, scaly, itchy patches that can lead to scarring
  • Leukoplakia, thickened white patches inside the mouth

ANN ARBOR, Mich. Women may blame their husbands or boyfriends for headaches, tears and stress. But they can’t be blamed for those nasty recurrent yeast infections, contrary to popular belief.

A new study by University of Michigan Health System researchers finds that the presence of yeast in male sex partners do not make women more prone to recurrent yeast infections. Certain sexual activities, however, were linked to increased risk of recurrent yeast infections in women, according to the study.

“Many physicians, and many women, believe that women get recurrent yeast infections because their partner passes the yeast back to them during intercourse. This study refutes that belief,” says study author Barbara Reed, M.D., M.S.P.H., professor of Family Medicine at the U-M Medical School. “This study suggests the risk for recurrent infections is related to something else perhaps the woman’s immune response to the yeast.”

Candida vulvovaginitis, or yeast infection, is one of the most common diagnoses in American women. About three-quarters of women will have at least one yeast infection in their lives, and 40 percent have recurrent infections. The Candida yeast are often found in both women and men in the genital area, rectum and mouth.

What Happens If I Dont Treat It

If BV doesnt clear up on its own or you dont properly treat it, it can increase your risk of contracting an STI, such as HIV, chlamydia, or gonorrhea. If youre pregnant, it can also increase your risk of early delivery.

Untreated BV also increases your risk for a condition called pelvic inflammatory disease. This condition can affect fertility and increases the risk for premature delivery if youre pregnant, according to the Center for Young Womens Health.

Heres What To Do If You Suspect You Have A Yeast Infection

While you might be tempted to just run to CVS to grab some Monistat when you think you have a yeast infection, Dr. Cackovic cautions against self-treating. Even if you recognize the symptoms, its hard to know for sure on your own what type of infection youre dealing with you might mistake these conditions for yeast infections, for example.

Without knowing for sure whether the infection is bacterial or fungal, its easy to treat the wrong thing and end up making your symptoms worse and prolonging the problem. It becomes a vicious cycle, he says. If you notice changes in your discharge, accompanied by itching, burning, redness, or just an overall discomfort, its time to pay your dear gyno a visit and get things straightened out.

The good news is that if you treat a yeast infection promptly and properly, treatment is typically smooth sailing. So dont hesitate once that trademark itch hits.
